VODG welcomes government’s step forward in tackling health inequalities but urges practical, immediate action

Government has responded to the Learning Disabilities Mortality Review (LeDeR) and announced a consultation to improve learning disabilities staff training.

Responding to these announcements VODG chief executive Dr Rhidian Hughes said:

“There are around 1.5m people in the UK who have a learning disability. It is well established that people with support needs seek more health care than people without, and they have more unmet health needs. They are likely to experience greater vulnerability to developing additional health conditions and higher rates of premature death.

Government’s announcement in response to the learning from deaths review and the consultation to improve learning disabilities staff training are very welcome. But there must be more than words on a page – we need practical, immediate action that makes a difference to people’s lives.

There should not be any lack of urgency in addressing the severe health inequalities experienced by people with learning disabilities”.
