Plastic whale goes on tour to raise awareness about ocean pollution

A 10-metre whale made entirely from plastic will be touring the UK this month to help raise awareness about ocean pollution, as part of Sky’s Ocean Rescue campaign.

More than 8 million tonnes of plastic pollute the world’s oceans every year and if this continues, by 2050 the plastic in the sea could weigh more than all the fish.

The plastic whale, which is made from the same amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean every second, is travelling the country to help inspire people to take action. Made up of plastic bags, cutlery and straws, the whale will visit seaside locations including Newquay and Blackpool, as well as major cities such as Cardiff and Birmingham after its initial launch in London.

Earlier this year the Ocean Rescue campaign was involved in a series of workshops and events organised by Business in the Community. The events were themed around recycling plastics and the circular bathroom – which encourages people to apply green credentials and recycling in the bathroom by using bins and making sure to recycle items such as shampoo and shower gel bottles, which often go straight to landfill. The workshops saw a group of businesses brought together by Business in the Community and its President, HRH The Prince of Wales, and named The Circular Economy Taskforce, who will champion the circular economy. In July they launched the Circular Offices Campaign, which will help bring the circular ecnomy “to life” in the private sector.

Over the years, Sky has built a strong track record – becoming the world’s first carbon neutral media company in 2006. Its Sky News poll revealed that 84 per cent of people are concerned about the amount of plastic pollution in our oceans. Through Sky Ocean Rescue it wants to shine a spotlight on the issues of ocean health and inspire millions to take positive action to protect the ocean.
