Public services news round-up: April 2018

This month we have a bumper edition of news and events, and a lot of opportunities to get involved in public services reform.

VCSE Health Review – next phase launch

In the context of the rapidly changing health and care environment, a second phase of the Joint VCSE Review on health and wellbeing will be launched on 16 May, with a renewed focus on a revised set of recommendations to prompt local and national action. The final report of the review originally launched in 2016 with 28 recommendations jointly agreed by the Department of Health, Public Health England and NHS England.

The second phase will be launched at a webinar at 15.30 on 16 May, presented by Alex Fox OBE (chair of the VCSE Review), Glen Garrod (executive director of ADASS) and Neil Churchill (director, NHS England). It’s aimed at statutory organisations, the VCSE sector, commissioners and other health and care organisations – if you’d like to join, simply save this link and click through on the day.

Public Services Transformation Academy Conference

The Public Service Transformation Academy is holding It doesn’t have to be this way – the public service: state of transformation conferenceon 24 May – its first ever. It’ll be a great way to hear from senior leaders passionate about commissioning and delivering public services in a different way and share knowledge about what really works in public service transformation. Final Clinks TrackTR report on rehabilitation

Clinks will be launching their final report on the Transforming Rehabilitation programme on 8 May here at NCVO. It comes hot on the heels of the recently published HM Inspectorate of Probation report that found charities were less involved than ever in the delivery of probation services.

First parliamentary citizen’s assembly on adult social care

Parliament has announced it will be holding the first ever citizen’s assembly to discuss the best way of funding adult social care – a very positive development in what will possibly be one of the most challenged funding areas over the next Parliament and beyond. The long-awaited social care green paper is presently expected to be published before Parliament’s summer recess in late July, although it’s been delayed before.

New Health and Wellbeing Alliance webinar and event series

A new series of public webinars and events has been published as part of the Health and Wellbeing Alliance programme, which are open to anyone across the voluntary sector to participate in. These are great opportunities to hear directly from NHS England and others in the health arena about ongoing work, and feed in your organisation’s experiences.

  • Webinar: Review of Volunteering and community contributions in later life – 10 May 2018, 12.00–13.00. Feed into this review being led by the Centre for Ageing Better in partnership with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The theme of the session will be enabling inclusive volunteering and community contribution.   • Event: Preventing youth violence – a practical public health response – 15 May, 08:30–10.00, Department of Health and Social Care, Victoria Street, London. Join this special breakfast session hosted by Race Equality Foundation (REF), members of the Health and Wellbeing Alliance focused around implementing a public health approach to preventing violence in the lives of children and young people.   • Webinar: Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships/Integrated Care Systems and the Voluntary Sector – 7 June 2018, 10.30–11.30. Find out about the current state of play of sustainability and transformation partnerships and integrated care systems.   • Webinar: Social Prescribing update – 11 July, 10.00–11.00.
