Landfill Tax Communities Scheme annual report now available

The Landfill Disposals Tax Communities Scheme 2020/21 report highlights the incredible achievements of community groups across Wales who have been working to improve the environment in their communities.

This is the third year of operation for the Wales-wide Landfill Disposals Tax Communities Scheme (LDTCS) and this year we saw 29 local projects and one project of national significance awarded funding. The local projects aim to take action on the environment in areas within five miles of a landfill site or significant waste transfer station.

The report highlights how the scheme is delivering against key Welsh Government priorities. Projects also support the new Programme for Government published following the 2021 Senedd Elections, and will continue to do so over the next two years of grant delivery. You can download it here.

THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

Lindsay Cordery-Bruce, Chairperson of the Landfill Disposals Tax Communities Scheme has said:

‘In a year which presented unexpected challenges I have been impressed and inspired by the commitment of community groups to lead action on the environment through the LDTCS funded projects.

‘After spending more time than we usually would inside our own homes I think we have all come to appreciate even more the importance of our natural environment and the joys in working to enhance it together.

‘Groups across Wales have come together in new ways to deliver LDTCS projects, adapting and learning to continue to connect their communities and lead action on the environment.’

OUR PROJECTS

The report includes case studies from previous successful projects who have delivered incredible projects in their communities. Such as:

• Canolfan Maerdy who have been diverting food destined for landfill to local families in need.
• Keep Wales Tidy who have protected and restored Pen Garnbugail hillside within Gelligaer and Merthyr Common.
• Vincent Wildlife Trust who have worked with volunteers to reinforce the pine marten population. As well as many more fantastic organisations.
• Cardiff University Grange Pavilion Project which has transformed a neglected Bowls pavilion and green as a multifunctional facility for Grangetown’s diverse communities.
• Refurbs Flintshire’s Bike Refurbs project which repairs and repurposes unwanted bikes that would otherwise be disposed of as waste.
• Swansea Canal Society who have restored the Swansea Canal to a standard deemed navigable by the Canal River Trust.
• Innovate Trust’s Boosting Nature Project which supports adults with learning disabilities to increase their physical and mental wellbeing, as well as their knowledge and understanding of the natural world.

FUNDING STILL AVAILABLE

If you feel inspired to think about ways to improve the environment in your area the Landfill Disposals Tax Communities Scheme (LDTCS) is now open to applications. For main grants between £5,000 – £49,000 and Nationally Significant projects up to £250,000.

The deadline for applications is 23 January 2022, and successful projects will start in March 2022.

The LDTCS funds projects with a focus on Biodiversity, Waste Minimisation and the reduction of Waste to Landfill and Wider Environmental Enhancements.

HELP TO APPLY

We receive a high number of applications which makes the funding process very competitive. If you would like support and guidance in the development of a project you can contact your local County Voluntary Council.

In order to submit a request for funding, you will need to register with WCVA’s Multipurpose Application Portal (MAP). If you have previously registered with MAP, you can log in by entering your username and password on the home screen.
