What’s next for the State of the Sector?

Throughout the summer at NPC we launched a series of pieces from our State of the Sector programme. This work seeks to inject new thinking on how charity sector leaders can adapt and thrive in this changing context.

Charities taking charge is the culmination of a six month research process into how charities are experiencing the changing world, and what the sector is doing to deliver greater impact. You can get a glimpse of our findings in the video below.

After Charities taking charge came Flipping the narrative, a collection of essays from leaders who were putting into action some of the principles for transformation that emerged in our research.

But we’re not done yet. Over the autumn months we’ll be putting on a series of events to expand this work. These will help the sector engage with the research and continue the conversation about how charities can thrive in these tough times. Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Find out what’s next for the role of the voluntary sector in improving health, well-being and care outcomes. Our policy briefing with Alex Fox OBE, chair of the Department of Health’s VCSE review, will cover the latest from this work.
  • Join us in Glasgow on 2 October where we’ll go through our research findings and discuss the key issues—from diversity to Brexit—with State of the Sector programme supporters PwC.
  • Explore philanthropy and devolution with us party conferences. The Conservative party event features State of the Sector essayist Danny Kruger in Manchester on 3 October, and is outside the secure zone so is open to all. We’ll also be at the Labour party conference in Brighton on 25 September with Manchester metro mayor Andy Burnham. Both events are chaired by our Policy Advisory Board member Sonia Sodha.
  • Hear from Scope CEO Mark Atkinson, whose essay on the charity’s new direction caused quite a buzz. He’ll be speaking at our annual conference NPC Ignites on 11 October, where we’ll also explore other themes from the research—from digital and data to relationships with the state.
  • Get the latest on the implications of Brexit for the voluntary sector at our policy briefing with Neil Sherlock—Partner in Corporate Affairs at PwC and previously special advisor to the former Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg—on 3 November at NPC’s offices.
  • We’ll be in Birmingham on the afternoon 29 November talking about the research with State of the Sector essayists Sue Bent and Debbie Pippard, alongside Stephen Hale from Refugee Action. The event will be chaired by Jill Halford, another of our essayists. We’re also working on an event in Bristol as part of Trustees Week.

We hope that this programme of events will help leaders think through how the sector can deliver greater impact in a changing world.
