Do we need noisy troublemakers?

I am currently studying for the International Advanced Diploma in Fundraisingwhich is fascinating and challenging, requires a Herculean amount of reading, and makes me one of a select group of fundraisers internationally who have had the courage to take it on. It also leads me to make daft* proclamations like “Oh, I read something interesting about that, would you like me to write a blog on it for Trustees Week” (*daft because I am already struggling to keep up with the reading, and panicking about the next assignment, and could have done without adding ‘Write Blog’ to this week’s ‘To Do’ list).

The week beginning on Monday 13November 2017 is Safeguarding Week in Wales. It also happens to be Trustees’ Week, which is a lucky coincidence, because safeguarding is an important responsibility for charity trustees. Safeguarding Week aims to raise awareness about safeguarding children, young people and adults at risk, so I’d like to take this opportunity to remind trustees about their safeguarding responsibilities.
Why should charities use the new charity governance code?
It’s Trustees’ Week and Rosie Chapman who chairs the Charity Governance Code steering group considers the benefits of trustees adopting the code.
These days pretty much everyone accepts that governance, both the formal structure of a group, and how decisions – particularly major decisions – get made, matters in charities. Without wanting to rake over old ground, most of us are also aware of the media’s recent ‘shock, horror’ stories about charities, for example relating to fundraising, which have led to some people saying that the public have lost their innocence in their relationship with charities.
